Preliminary exercise: Research and planning

 Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

For my preliminary exercise I will use the song starlight Dave same song used in my coursework

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene

Dave: Starlight
- use of multiple shots using long and close ups
- focusing on main subject matching the tempo of the song
-long angle shots showing Dave as powerful
- use of handheld camera shots relating to Tiktok and new digital conventions
-multiple locations being filmed while maintaining being the main subject
- fade at the start and fast paced editing keeping the audiences attention

On E: Visualizer
-fast paced editing with multiple shots of the subject
-use of cars and petrol garage to show multiple locations of the music video
- use of high key lighting at night to show the representation of the artist and the brand identity
- the use of sunglasses to be ominous to the audience
-own and casual clothes to represent the artists identity to the audience
- close ups on reaction of people receiving money from Drake

Drake: Gods plan
- quick cuts focusing on different subjects
- use of giving money to the poor and reaction helps build the brand identity and encouraging audiences
- low angle shots showing Drake as powerful
-tracking shots following Drake throughout his neighbourhood and inspiring others

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your TikTok music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

This video will be an interview on the band members talking about the song and explaining the lyrics while being asked questions by an interviewer, this will help the audiences understanding of the lyrics and getting to know the artists which will promote the music video and gain popularity. Medium close ups and close ups will be used to highlight the facial expression of the band. It will be filmed in a classroom setting. The non diegetic sound will be used to show the song in the background when explaining the lyrics.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project)

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

The costumes will be casual representing the artists identity to the audience and also a calmed relaxed setting like a classroom so the artist can explain the lyrics to the interviewer and audience. No make up used on the artist as it represents his identity to the audience ensuring they follow him and builds a fan base. The lighting used will be high-key lighting and medium/ close up shots will be used to put focus on the subject image, the props used will be a chair where the artist will be answering and explaining to the audience. This helps the audience understand the style and genre of the artist as the mise en scene used allows the appropriate fan base to be targeted and following the artist creating a larger fan base.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.
